Odd Tuesdays Cineclub presents… Return to Oz (1985)
Tuesday, December 9, 7:30PM – FREE.
Viewers of a certain age will have fond memories of Return to Oz as the film that abruptly ended their childhood and permanently traumatized them as only a bleak, surreal, and grotesque fantasy can. A far cry from the Judy Garland musical, this is master editor Walter Murch’s only foray into directing and a gorgeously rendered, genuinely unsettling work of imagination. More loyal to the original novels of L. Frank Baum than The Wizard of Oz, it’s also a great showcase of the kinds of practical special effects that now seem to have been permanently abandoned in favor of CGI.
Come for the 80s nostalgia, stay for the Princess who wears a variety of living, breathing, interchangeable heads. And actually, if your kid’s already weird, this movie can’t make things any worse, so bring the little rascal.
