Auditions for our next play!
EMP Collective will be producing The Potatoes of August by Sibyl Kempson, directed by Evan Moritz, this October 9th through 25th.
This play, by one of New York’s most impossibly bizarre playwrights, follows two American couples entering retirement. As their mid-life crises pull them in different directions, they are forced to unite when a horrible discovery is made… All the potatoes in the world have become sentient. The potatoes have small brains, speak in rhizomatic riddles, and slowly break down the outdated belief-systems of our main characters, transforming them into action heroes, intellectuals, oppressors and oppressed in this genre-bending experimental play.
We are looking to cast seven actors. 4 actors, male or female, who can play in the 50 to 70 year range. 3 actors, male or female, any age, who are comfortable puppeteering.
Character break down:
Buck: A “Man’s Man” – quick to anger.
Fern: Buck’s wife. An oppressed house-wife who transforms into the action hero of the story.
Bethy: A teacher who is stern and quiet, pragmatic and calculating.
Gordon: Bethy’s husband who becomes fascinated by hunting and gathering.
3 Potato actors: Alien potatoes who are taking over the world… or maybe they just want to live away from humans. They are capable of complex, hive-like mentalities. Auditioners are asked to prepare a short monologue or use cold readings from the script.
Auditions will be held Saturday, June 21st, 2-4PM and Wednesday, June 28, 7-9PM.
